We both love to travel, we love being in nature and essentially we love life on this planet. We also believe in climate change and believe this is the biggest threat to everything we hold dear. We keep wondering how we as individuals can in some way part of the solution, and to travel and live as sustainable as possible seems like the best place to start.

We also would like to make it really clear that this challenge is not to preach to others about how “fabulously sustainable” we are.  We are not. Living sustainable can be really hard, as well as a total minefield of information, especially when on the move. This is why we have decided to document our trip – to show our chatleges, our progress, to share any tips we find along the way and more importantly to hear what tips you may have for us. You can send us your suggestions here.

Where we’re going

Being Digital Nomads we often travel to live and work in cheaper and sunnier locations than our hometowns (London and Maastricht) so we have decided to head back to a place we both love – Tarifa in the South of Spain. Alisa will be starting from London and will be using the ride sharing platform BlaBla Car and a Ferry (which is more sustainable than flying), in order to meet Sander in Maastricht. Follow her journey here. Once together our route will then look something like this:

Going

  • Maastricht
  • Nancy
  • Lyon
  • Montpellier
  • Barcelona
  • Valencia
  • Granada
  • Tarifa

Back

  • Tarifa
  • Cadiz
  • Lisbon
  • Porto
  • San Sebastian
  • La Rochelle
  • Paris
  • Londen

Mode of transport

For this trip we have decided to take the car.
Make: Toyota Verso Corolla     Gears: 6     Tyres: low-resistant, inflated to 2.5 bar.

Why we didn’t fly: Flying although faster, cheaper and more convenant, is the most polluting way to travel, especially short flights, with most of the CO2 being emitted during takeoff. Find out more here

Why we didn’t take the train: Although this might have been technically more sustainable it wasn’t a very practical option for us. As we are travelling for at least a few months, we have a lot of luggage (plus Sander is a kite surfer) so in total we have 2 suitcases, 3 kite bags, 1 kite board.

Why we choose car: We already had access to one, so this saves us money. We both need to work while we travel so the car gives the freedom to travel at our own pace without relying on timetables. The car also allows us the freedom to explore remote areas.
